Regret

You fell so far
The very stars did die
It’s such a shame
To see an angel cry
I heard you sing
Before you crashed below
And what you lost
I guess we’ll never know

You reached so high
The sun rebuked your love
You shred the air
So far from up above
You turned my way
But far too lost and shy
The flame too bright
So even that must die

You landed here
Spoke not of how you fell
A heaven’s song
Will sound the same in hell
And on this earth
Is only lost regret
You broke my heart
And you will feel it yet

You broke my heart
And you will feel it yet

Web

These tears I’ve shed
Are trapped within your spider’s web
Like silver sparkling in light
What hurts the most
Can most delight

This trap you laid
Seemed too beguiling, unafraid
I swept within your cold embrace
The sweetest fruit
Has bitterest taste

All for your device
These tears will crystallise to ice
And shine like diamonds in the day
What promised most
Yet most betrayed

Sinking

Floating peacefully downstream
Lost in exquisite
Haunting dreams
Gliding softly in the flow
Where the foolish
Often go
I am sinking through my skin
Water ends where
I begin
Songs are lilting through the spheres
Let me melt
And disappear

Quick dissolving all my soul
In completeness
I am whole
I can feel this folding in
What’s without
Is soon within
I am sinking but I feel
More alive and
So more real
Angels falling, break of day
Let me melt
And float away

Burning

I heard a voice
Incarnate and separate
Splintering the dawn
Calling my name
The stridency alarming
As though I’d lost my way
In the depths of the night

What words shimmer
In the morning air?
The fragments of a dream
I rose too slowly from
Or the presage of a mystery
More deep than dreamlike fantasy?

The lunatic dances
Before a burning citadel
Hearing the words of prophecy
And now I see
The mad one is me
Twirling on the spot
Trying to recall
The whispered words
Still spilling
Like blood and fire
Along my wall

Girl and the Raven

The girl and the raven appear at the morn
Awash with the tears she has shed before dawn
She’s floating in white, a mere sprite of despair
Combing her memories through her dark hair

The raven’s a psychopomp calling her home
To cease her travails and to no longer roam
But a heart that still bleeds will yet yearn for rebirth
Of a love lost forsaken beneath this sweet earth

The girl and the raven oft circle this place
Lost in a misery, suspended in space
You may see her ghost as you pass by this way
Or the raven still winging as dark into day

The girl seeks a lover she long ago lost
The raven’s a kind and a most patient host
His knowledge is deeper and old as her heart
Knows the girl and her memories will not easily part

The girl and the raven are legends of old
A cautionary tale that all mothers have told
Lose not your heart freely, not like the girl there
Combing her memories through her dark hair

New Year, New Blog!

Hi everyone

Happy New Year! I hope 2015 proves to be fabulous for you all!

I have a couple of major writing based new years resolutions this year. The first is to launch – as I am today – my sister blog to this: The Darker Realms, at http://www.helenmvalentina.com

The Darker Realms is a blog for my horror/occult/supernaturally themed writing. It will have some poetry from time to time but will primarily be for short prose pieces, serialised stories and short/micro stories in that theme.

In 2014 I wrote a trilogy of horror novels and in doing so went back to my first literary love – the world of Lovecraft, Poe, Stephen King, Ira Levin…the list goes on…

When I wrote the novels it came so easily and naturally I wondered why I hadn’t just written horror all the time – perhaps that is why my other published work (be it my self published novels or my poetry) is often so dark. Embrace the shadow!!

If you do like that kind of writing please visit and/or follow my sister blog. I’d love to share that aspect of my writing with you and also to find other writers in the blog-world with similar literary obsessions. 🙂

My other resolution is to try to get the horror trilogy a literary agent and then published in the more traditional sense. I know this is a lot of hard work then relies on a lot of luck, but this is the year I am determined to give it a go. Wish me luck!

In the meantime, have a wonderful 2015 as I said before!

Cheers

Helen V

Chess

Kingdoms lost
At bleak break of day
Count the cost

Foolish game
Each expendable
Just the same

We’re so small
Our hopes do not count
Not at all

Even kings
Cannot turn the tide
Not a thing

Gods will play
Make us start anew
Break of day

Fear

You were right to fear
We are here

It is far too late
To remediate

We will slake our thirst
On you first

You were right to fear
We are here

And though none believed
No reprieve

Underneath your bed
Like you said

It’s no nightmare yet
To forget

And though none believed
No reprieve

Dissolution

Faith dissolves and recreates
A fleeting bird
Do you see?
On the wings of a prayer?

Desolation calls for more
A distant twin to hope
Do you hear?
Remembering this day?

Abject we may fall
To ancient crosses now
Do you feel?
Against this pallid sky?

The past gives way to day
Dissolution, new beginning
Do you walk?
On shifting, wafting sands?

The bird of peace here formed
On decay and danger’s field
Do you fall?
Or fly defiant yet?

Winged bird of faith still flies
Beneath such birth we pray
Do you rise?
To see you full alight?

Corrosion

For years you slowly ate
The heart of me
The purest of my fruit
Fell to your cold decay
A thief within the night
You showed such cruelty
But coward, you would hide
At quiet break of day

For years you took your fill
One bite at a time
You soured the sweetest fruit
And spoiled the purest day
I know you are still proud
A master of your crime
A creature most at home
When causing disarray

For years you would corrode
The faith within my soul
I waited for some grace
You never would return
I guess I just denied
My sheer lack of control
But even innocence
Must finally fall and learn
