Resurrection

Angel 013

Misshapen hands
Too many lost years
drawn on a relentless rack
Curvature of spine,
bent now too many times
to the blunt force
of brutality
Raise your glittering eyes
full of blood-rinsed tears
to a morning
of uncertain hope
Years of cruelty
conspire now
To be etched in leathered skin
Found no kindness here,
no quarter or relief
Praying, mournful
but resolute
Redemption still within
your grasp
Your reach
will withstand this yet
Resurrection not too late.

Random Thoughts

Random

Thoughts start to flicker
across a mind that is not
burdened with intent

Bath

There is nothing so
delightful or soothing as
soaking in a bath

Regret

If you would pre-write
Your own obituary
Speak not of regret

Fickle Fashion

Vampires are passe
In the world’s attention span
all the blood’s run dry

Politics

Stupid politics
Tweedledum and tweedledee
think they aren’t the same

Memory

I tried to recall
That really important thing
I forgot to say

I tried to repeat
That once in a lifetime line
but it fades away….

Night Reverie

Night rings shrill in my ears
Fractal electricity
Humming beneath
Tar filled roads
And concrete beams

Lights against
Midsummer night sky
Seem to dance
To a madman’s lullaby

Strangers’ faces
Passed along nervous streets
Wear unreal masks
From some hidden ball
I lost my invitation to…

Skimming on this surface
This night’s melody
I am lost in a game
The white rabbit’s invitation
To nothing more than a dream

In the morning
Perhaps I will remember
What brought me to this moment
But for now all I can do
Is breathe.

Cross

Illuminated Cross

Illuminated Cross (Photo credit: a.saliga)

In the dream
I stand before
A dark illuminated cross
Feel the energy
Of the ages
Leeching from this symbol
Silent sentinel
Guarding the pathway
To an uncertain dawn.

Novel Writing and Publishing

In my About section I noted that I am writing novels and longer works of prose and fiction. I’m now progressing on that journey. Baby steps at first 🙂  I wrote a few novels more than a decade ago, and having done this and having received some helpful critique from manuscript assessment professionals I then let them gather dust because in those days online publishing was not a viable option and I loved writing rather than holding any great ambitions to be published or ‘known’ for writing (if that makes sense?).  I mean by this I had no interest in the general marketing of the books to publishers, so I didn’t try…the writing was the thing!!

Then I kind of went back to sleep creatively, concentrated on my daily work, and many years past.  And in those years, online publishing started to come into its own, and with its birth comes the possibility of publishing when you are happy with a work, and then people will either read or not, as they choose.  A more direct form of creativity and sharing that isn’t quite so much about sales figures, genres and so forth.

Now that such publishing is available, I’ve been working on updating the novels (funny how much has changed in our world over the past decade or so, particularly with technology, which can render general descriptions in works of fiction out of date so rapidly…). The first of the novels I’ve worked on has now had the efficient and kind attention of a professional editor, and I will start to traverse the world of getting a cover designed, formatting done and so forth.

This is new, exciting, and rather frightening all at once. I know many readers of this blog and/or other blogs I read are taking this journey too and I’d love any hints or thoughts about what to do, or perhaps more importantly what not to do.

I’d also appreciate your thoughts on whether, as it gets closer to publishing time (which probably isn’t for a few months yet given what is left to be done), you might like to see an excerpt or two, to see if you might be interested in reading the novel? I ask because most of what I write on here is poetry, and I really appreciate the support of everyone who reads and comments, but a novel is a different form, so I am just touching base to see if doing some excerpts would be welcome on this blog.

The first novel’s story is very poetic in its theme, in any case, about artists and writers, relationships, mythology in life and why we make decisions the way we do. So it is, probably not surprisingly, very similar in theme to a lot of my poetry.

Any feedback, suggestions or thoughts would be welcome…it’s an adventure and I’m not an experienced traveller on this path, so I’m relying on the kindness of others more travelled than I. 🙂

Newborn

A newborn
Cries upon
Seeing the world
For the first time
Harsh white light
Noise and confusion
Tossed from the deep
Serenity of the womb

Harbinger, perhaps
Of the nature of life
Moving from peace
To tumult
And back again?
Little child
Innocent to the patterns
Of the years
To come

Yet held so close
In a mother’s arms
There is comfort
Warmth and love
Who would then return
To the isolation of before
Once they are wrapped
In such regard?

Death

‘Break bread with me’
Said Death
Pulling out a seat
To rest his weary form
‘I’ve ridden long
Into the night’ he said
‘I’ll ride much longer
Ere the dawn’

‘Have you come for me?’
I politely asked
Not regretful for
Such a loss
‘Not for you just yet’
Said this reaper, grim
‘No need yet
To bear the cost’

‘So if you must ride
And will ride again
May I yet enquire
Who you pursue?’
He just shook his head
Cleared a rasping throat
‘Just be glad tonight
It isn’t you.’

‘Drink your wine with me’
Extolled shadowed Death
‘I am thirsty
To my soul’
And in that time
As he hung his head
I divined the price
of his role

‘All will flee from you
As you yet approach
All will wither
And none your friend’
‘Yes’ said Death ‘It’s true
But no matter this
All must meet with me
In the end’

‘When you come for me
On some other night
Will you yet recall
This strange commune?’
‘I promise you I will’
Said my deathly guest
‘Whether it be far away
Or soon’.

(my) Addictions

The online shopper
Hovers over the keypad
Credit card at hand

One more game to play
Majhong mania on-line
Barely lets you blink

Chocolate ice-cream calls
A muted but distinct voice
Dark temptation’s song

Vodka makes things right
Lethal hiding without taste
Still gives you a kick

Salt upon your skin
And the warmth of your caress
Hides all other sins

Blogging world beguiles
Just one more post to read now
Then I’ll go to bed…..

Ghazal 2

Secret comrades meeting here, rise and close your door
As though to battle bound let fervour fire your core

The traveller stakes his aim on conquering higher peaks
Then at once to greet them, strides brave across the floor

Tumbling kittens, sweet and wily, to draw you in
Beguiling trickster, fluffy feline chose the claw!

Struck by beauty of the garden, alive with spring
Loving nature, embracing now the rose, j’adore!

Summer yields to autumn, then winter takes control
Bitter mistress leaves all sweet seedlings froze to core

Light is failing, time is precious, the canvas draws
Beseeching model, artists muse to pose for more.

So with this attempt I tried to keep the themes of each couplet distinct as I understand the traditional ghazal requires…still not sure of the outcome but given the challenge of the form it is a worthy thing to keep trying I think! 🙂

Painting

Artistic fire
Colours are music and shade
Pigment melody.
