Sense Memory

Body wash in coconut and lime
Soothe away all the days woes
So sublime
Trick the mind
With sense recollection
Of simpler times

A moment
Of complete mindfulness
When I stop
I pause
Between acts, thoughts
And dreams
And simply be

And how this simple aroma
Rises up to me

Where does my body end
And this smooth
Silken sensation begin?
Not carnal or primal
But pure

This scent takes me to
A childhood
I perhaps never
Really knew
And through this perfect
Glitch in time
I am renewed

Ambition

Embrace sloth
It’s so much less effort

Don’t be so driven
to unrealised goals

Recognise the wisdom
in slowing down a moment
Or the beauty in repose

Ambition’s just
another name for neurosis
You can run a race
so hard

You fail to notice
no-one’s trying
anymore
to keep up.

Traditional

In matters of the heart
I am not traditional
Everything has a kind
of quirk

I’m not perverse
but it’s still relative
In my occupation
I’m more conservative

This veering from the norm
does not arise from choice
An inner voice
keeps pestering me

For whys and wherefores,
the logic of a thought
which kills the romance
by degrees

Weariness

sleeping

sleeping (Photo credit: riebschlager)

A weariness engulfs me
I am spent
And yet the drive to find these words
Will not relent
Release me yet

Within my bones
An ache arises
And like a serpent coiled within
Prepares to strike
With sudden ferocity
Bidding me give in, give in!

My eyes are heavy
Weights on eyelids
Struggling now to stay awake
And somehow here
Record this struggle
Before I sleep
Then greet daybreak

Oh muse so cruel
So unrelenting
Let me rest now, let me sleep
So on the morn
I wake refreshed
To serve these promises I keep

Unconnected Haiku

Wrapped up in this warmth
created; autumn leapfrogs
summer’s true decline

Shadow puppets sway
Children’s faces pressed against
Store windows at night

Lovers’ fingers can’t
touch; no passion can be found
here between their graves

Supernatural
foe barred; circle symbols hold
demon world in thrall

Weather Portent

Approaching storm

Approaching storm (Photo credit: rarvesen)

Strange days
So cold before the season’s time
Hiding within
My home like a haven
A bleaker sky
Seems to call to a memory
Just out of reach
Chilling temperature
Sinking in my skin
Warmed by home and hearth
And shelter
From a forgotten, coming storm

Aspirational Alliteration

This competition
corrodes camaraderie

Vicious victory
from verbal vilification

Hopeful honesty
hides from hurtful humour

Bonding betrayed
by bloodied besting

Stop senseless slaughter!
Souls strive so sadly

Unity ultimately
undoes unfair undermining

Hands holding,
highlighting hopeful hearts.

Reflection

When I reflect
on all the possibilities
of love
across my life
it is the words unspoken
chances not taken
that epitomise
my response

Was this fear
of rejection or the unknown?
Or beneath this
something more?
Given I
who so loves words
and finds them easy
written and spoken
in most things
and at most times,
still stayed silent?

Perhaps what stopped my tongue
every time
at crucial,
sensitive moments
was an odd honesty
and hidden kindness
to not mislead
Given I knew
internally
I had nothing to say….

Club Ritual

People dancing at a nightclub (“clubbing”). Or possibly dancing to live music (a band) at their local pub. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

In these light strewn modern caverns
Where the beauteous ones all meet
Dance their own beloved rituals
In search of chemical release
Would the fabled gods of old
Swoop on the denizens within
Seek in alcohol’s pure succor
Bids for relevance and sin?

Moving slowly through the melee
Rhythm caught in each heart beat
Is this now a friendly stranger
Or Mephistopheles we greet?
And were Faust to gain dominion
By the bartering of his soul
We’d see this whirling sea communion
Could engulf his Devil whole

Ah! This beauty is so fleeting
And its offerings darkly pure
As it speaks of something older
Some disease without a cure
So in entering this club-land
Certain rules you must obey
If you’ve come to find your soul mate
If you’d see the break of day

Symbol stamped upon our wrist now
Lets you enter, lets you leave
Dance your dance of wild abandon
Find sweet solace should you grieve
But the beautiful have spoken
Only their kind let within
To this nightly competition
No mere mortal yet can win.

Winged Creatures (2)

Sweet owl bring to us
Minerva’s wisdom and word
from the depth of night

Butterly so bright
Colours of the souls rainbow
Promise of cocoon

Raven travel miles
cross Styx with the ferryman
leading souls to home

Eagle’s great wing span
and sharp eye encompass all!
Fly now to the core

Dragon dreaming deep
Scales of steel and fire rise
whiplashing the sky

Gargoyle poised above
cathedrals here in Rome’s heart
watch over this dawn
