Noli Me Tangere

My tombstone reads
Noli Me Tangere
In death as was in life
I would not love-born
Children bear
To no man be a wife
And should they seek
A lock of hair
I gave instead a knife

Noli Me Tangere
My linens read
And only as I pleased
The truest words
I ever said
Thought nothing but a tease
But into dark
Betrayal’s bed
I feel then by degrees

Touch me not
Was my sweet song
To all may it be heard
There is no world
Where I belong
As falconer or bird
To seek in me
A passion strong
Is nothing but absurd

Poverty’s Child

Stark brutality
A lash tells many
many stories
Bruises form beneath
hidden, innocent skin

Poverty’s child
Wide eyes hopeful
Pitiful question
There’s no alibi
given in this moment

Wondering glance
A passing interest
is just passing
Never sees the darkness
in this fractured world

Passerby smiles
come far too cheaply
No clemency
or true sanctuary
is ever offered here

The One

I wasn’t The One
In the end it wasn’t me
You took into your heart
To hold you tenderly
It wasn’t me

And when she calls your name
It isn’t with my voice
It just can’t be the same
There’s no-one here to blame

I wasn’t The One
This love was never real
This darkly sinking loss
Is nothing I should feel
And yet I’m still quite cross
It should hold such appeal
And yet it isn’t real…

Lucifer’s Song – for Prompt 57 – Shock and Seething Rise to Vengeance

Where once were allies, are now foes
This battle started long ago
Your kingdom spoke of love and care
Angelic music flowing there
A harmony, a table round
This depth of fealty so profound

You promised much, you promised all
Knelt at your feet to hear your call
The heavens woken at your word
Our loyalty a flaming sword
You called me precious, raised me high
And promised kingdoms bye and bye

But over time the truth did rise
I fretted, pondered on such lies
A world I could call here my own
A fiefdom worthy for a throne
But all was yours and all was One
This moon could never conquer sun

And so I raged with blighted pride
Not yet enough, just by your side
A shadow falling from your light
Makes me this lesser king of night
And here such smaller beings dwell
With darker secrets yet to tell

I raged in heaven to the last
When from your mighty side I’m cast
No crime is greater than I tried
To be myself, no more denied
To serve in heaven or rule in hell
You made your servant very well

In history’s darker page I hide
I’m called the fallen, god of pride
God of detritus and the low
Within my heart such anger grows
I’ll have my vengeance soon or late
From greatest love comes greatest hate

I am a bit obsessed with this sort of theme at the moment – comes from writing a horror trilogy I suppose. 🙂

Miracles

Offering up your gold coin
For a miracle to happen
Societies bid you join
Their parade so lost, misshapen
But it’s all a dance
Trickery of structured light
Not some better circumstance
No miracles here tonight

Hear the fevered preacher sing
Songs of subtle faith and need
Through what belief can he now bring
His angels out of pure greed?
Miracles not here for sale
Or you can’t afford the price
How can any good prevail
From this devil’s pure device?

Forgotten Dreams

Fleeting image in a mirror
In a darkened, silent room
A flash of white and pure light
Black hair flowing in a stream
She said ‘It’s nothing like it seems’
Ill spent days and forgotten ways
I think I know now what she means

Long afternoons in country summer
Crackling grass that yearns for rain
Thunder crashing and lightning flashing
Electricity of strange extremes
She said ‘We live our lives as dreams’
Memories gone, not dreamt upon
Out of truth pure sunlight gleams

Strangers standing in the stairwells
Shadows nodding at their words
Forsaken treasure, lazy pleasure
Fireflies trapped in moonlight beams
She said ‘It’s unravelling at its seams’
When we had gone, no sunlight shone
No-one recalls forgotten dreams

Hymn to the Fall

Hovering above me this crystal night I felt
the hand of spirits caress my cheek and then
it seemed I heard them speak and call me traitor, call me weak
As though upon their testimony worlds would rise and fall

These many roads I travel both on foot and in my mind
coalesce to one true journey over valleys
crossing mountains and deep gulleys and within my soul is sullied
by the choices that are given and the promises recalled

In this bleak and utter darkness
fretful I toss within my sleep and call out
to all the angels deep to tend to promises I’ll keep
before daylight breaks above me to forgive me for it all

I have bled out all my deeper loss and sorrow
and accepted every demon kiss , no denial
that I summoned this and ached for pleasure, yearned for bliss
and true individuation that is nothing but the Fall

Nothing Matters – for Prompt 56 Indescribable Frustration

This rock I push atop this hill
I feel it settle well, until
From life’s sweet canopy they spill
This flotsam on my window sill

Again I stress my task undone
The cake unbaked, the weave un-spun
Each furnish questions, what’s begun
As night must fall and swallow sun?

They wait you out until you leave
From life’s dark patterns no reprieve
You wore your heart there on your sleeve
None to remember, none to grieve

Each time I try, bleak faith withstands
This god that’s laughing at my plans
What one may open, another bans
Mere mercy slipping through my hands

Each day the journey starts anew
Forgetting what I’ve waded through
You are not me, and I’m not you
These things we pray, these things we do

This rock I push here every day
As mountains crumble, seas give way
A burning firmament on display
Where nothing matters anyway

To the Last

To the last drop of wine
I drink to you
Remembering our days
before solitude descended
and in my grief befriended
me so gentle in its sway

To the last melody
I sing to you
How I danced in your arms
before darkness called the tune
and stole happiness to soon
All cherished hope betrayed

To the last lingering kiss
I gave to you
as you lay in deathly shade
Before time could steal your breath
and bring to you the kiss of death
and take you on its way

To the last drop of wine
I drink to you

Lantern Poem – Knowing Too Late

I
took you
by the hand
Hopeful, foolish
lost

Light
dazzling
Dance for me
till we both spin
down

I
trusted
your dear heart
not knowing you
well

You
held me
just one time
then disappeared
Gone

I
took you
at your word
Now this poor soul
knows

You
took me
for a fool
Dancing delight
Gone
