Complexity

Come explore with me he said
A world of infinite complexity
Stretch your hesitant mind
To distant horizons and you’ll find
Your reach can far outstrip
Your prescribed and taught belief
Those ones who held you back
Just a begger, a fool and a thief

The mind so labile it will form
Around concepts hereto hidden
And then create and recreate a norm
More blazing than the stars above
To think so clear is yet to love
The world and its superb design
A rising soul transcendent
Encased within your shimmering mind

We are so much more than they will say
Their dictates hold us ever down
They cannot claim the greatest prize
Unless the masses are kept underground
Arise, he said and find your place
In something pure and clear as grace
Come now that you explore with me
How complex becomes simplicity

Arising

In tremulous moments
Between sleep and wakefulness
A voice shudders deep
Within my wondering ears
This is the year
This is the year

How long awaited
This embrace of serpent form
Wings battering cheeks
Soft, gentle and warm
So sublime
Knowing
This is the time
This is the time

Arising from depths of sea
And shattering the sky
With glorious silver form
No need to wonder why
Or how
The time is now
The time is now

Nourishment

Each day
Given unto us
Such nourishment
For body and soul
That spirit and form
Are complete
And whole
Let this be
Our sacred goal
From youth
Until we are old
We pray
Each day

Everyday Dreams

These many years the boundaries
of my suburban life have held me in
And I must admit some security
attended such limitations
I would tend my house and garden
Feed family and nurture all
Except me, except me

I understood that this
was how things ought to be
But standing by the fencing I stretch
and wonder for some moments
what it might mean to be free
A loss, some pain
A taste of piquancy
But would other kingdoms
hold me in their thrall
or say this is not my place at all
That only others dare to tread
such golden paths
And many yet may come
Except me. except me

Such are my everyday dreams
Small, cherished fantasy
As the sun ascends the sky
then even so one day may I
If I should dare to tilt the universe
and face the mirror back so flagrantly to me
I might yet aspire
and find the fire
given to others so free
Except me, except me

Salieri

I am but fortune’s fool
May as well be
Salieri
Striving
Baying at the moon
While Mozart’s melodies make symphonies
Of the celestial forms

My fingernails dug so deep
Into my own skin
I bled
From all the glories that
Were scattered
On some other head
Too easily some gather all
The flowers to their arms
Too easily

Far easier to be
A talentless creature
Surviving on my wits and not
Incipient but never blooming genius
So much better for
The most of us
And so for me, for me
If I could only see

Unable ever to reach
Nature’s golden pinnacle
But always to be
But secondary
Much more bitter fruit
Than to never strive
To be a master
To be alive

I am nature’s joke
Far better to be
Salieri
Striking out to the blessed prodigy
If not perfection
Then perfectly wild
Before the shame
And loss
Is reconciled

Let It In (for my father – in memory)

“There is a crack, a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in” Leonard Cohen, Anthem

In this moment
Precious chance
Let it in
Let it in

Just a promise
Warmest glance
Let it in
Let it in

It’s returning
Peace will dance
Let it in
Let it in

In your darkest
Circumstance
Let it in
Let it in

The Gathering

Blessed is
The gathering
Anointing here
A newborn king
Butterflies free
Angels weep and sing
Blessed is
The gathering

Many decry
What this may bring
Fear and taunts
Mud will sling
But on fury
Honour wings
Blessed is
The gathering

Fools will weep
Bells must ring
For the world
This time must bring
All our souls
Remembering
Blessed is
The gathering

Summer Sea Memory

Flickering like old movies
On wartime movie screens
Summer sea memory
Greets me
In a waking dream

Part beautiful and part dread
It’s nothing like it seems
Summer sea memory
Haunts me
In a waking dream

Pinned like butterflies shivering
Voiceless cannot scream
Summer sea memory
Traps me
In a waking dream

For My Mother – In Memory

Keep this little light shining
Honour and truth
The greater questions
Of the imponderable universe
All those nights
Speaking of the ineffable
The sublime
Nourish me still
Give me belief
And almost faith
That kindness and care
Still replenish this earth
And even in the darkest times
Steadfast we will still
Keep this little light shining

Leaving

The hardest part I recall
In leaving you
Was those final stairs
Up and away
From the beach where we met
And wandered so long
Hand in hand

Now distant
My hands are free
To find another love and another time
But those stairs will haunt me
With the loss of promise
And the realisation
Of regret
