Forgotten Afternoons

Sweet forgotten afternoons
You don’t recall
But pressed within my memory book
I see them all
The way the light fell
Through the leaves
Upon your hair
And the messy, noisy children
Running everywhere
And how you’d say
“This season is beyond compare”
But it was you
It was you
Beyond compare

Years have passed from afternoons
You don’t recall
Now the light is dim and
No children at all
But the melody
Lingers in my soul
Like a trance
And in memories never
Made between us
I still dance
Till you’re singing
“Our love is so beyond compare”
Oh would that you
One moment too
Had sung this there!

And as I age those afternoons
You don’t recall
Give me comfort only
Tender, sweet, so small
The way the light fell
Through the leaves
Upon your hair
How when you turned
To look upon me
Hope would flare!
And how I’d yearn
For something so beyond compare
If only you
Had seen me true
Those moments there

Trust (Part One)

In you we trust
Blindfolded
Waiting here
Desperate
We must
World just falls to chaos
No sure anchor
Yet appears
We’re just waiting here
In trust

May your words
Yet be true
As you say
Belief is hard
Absurd
Is it propaganda
All we’ve seen
And heard?
We’ve so much at stake
On your words

Sign

And when we sign our name
The whole world changes
Not the same
Entering into
The big boys game
When we sign our name

And when we take a chance
We hear new music
For the dance
A bit of pride
And circumstance
When we take a chance

And with this promise made
A new door opens
Table laid
Ready for the
Price we’ve paid
With this promise made

And when we sign our name
Within we’re changing
Not the same
Lighting deep
The inner flame
When we sign our name

Beautiful

When I am weary of the world
The clatter clutter of ambition
The surrender and submission
To the paper and the pen
To the dollar or the yen
Competition’s flags unfurled
I come to this most sacred space
Where art is hung with quiet grace
The beautiful scenes from artist’s eyes
Can yet becalm, delight, surprise
I find my home within the swirl
Of this beautiful, beautiful world

A simple portrait of a lake
A small boat tethered to the shore
Near autumn leaves is so much more
Than the paper and the pen
The dollar or the yen
So here my heart may still adore
And here I know beyond my daze
Beauty breathes free in coloured haze
And comforted I may rest awhile
Till deep within my soul I smile
These simple things are all it takes
A small boat idly on a lake
And then I know there’s no mistake
Such moments do a whole world make

Dandelion Wishes

Light as air
Sweet dandelions
Hover there

On the stair
I watch as they fly
Light as air

Make a wish
Before they are gone
In the sky

Till you know
Wishes all come true
If you try

Balance

One by one
Two by two
The universe is made
All the signs
Here align
For the light parade

Balance for me
Like a charm
Overhead
None will falter
None will harm
It is said

It begins
As it ends
Perpetual flow
How the colours
Weave and blend
We all know

In the white
Summer’s light
Balance here
Gives us faith
In our souls
Every year

One by one
Two by two
The universe is made
All the signs
Here align
For the light parade

Too Late To Pray

shutterstock_768357262

And is it now
Too late to pray?
As children we rehearsed the verse
In ancient books and we hardly cared
Each word we said
It was enough to simply recite
And hope that soon the doors would open
Setting us free to play
Never mindful of what it might be
To one day need to pray
But finally kneeling at the grate
A hostage to some tragic fate
We came to pray too late

And if we spoke
Would Someone hear our voice?
We held this all in low esteem from ignorance
We played to win and never counted
On other circumstance
Believed in science and the laws of maths
And physics as our guiding lights
Never realising they might let us down
And fall away
Until nothing’s left at all but to pray
But finally here disconsolate
Before the fire of indifferent fate
We came to pray too late

But could our voice
Be somehow still heard?
As parents might at first ignore
The pleas of children who have played
And strayed to vices once implored
To leave alone
Yet mellow they yet waver at the free flowing tears
And promises to atone
Could it be that somewhere
Someone simply waits
For us to come
So finally kneeling at the grate
A love that cannot deviate says
You never pray too late.

Reclaim

Reclaim the butterfly
Symbol of transformation
Not simple
Not easy
But fine
Not manipulated
Traumatised
And degraded
Reclaim the symbol
For what its purpose was
And always should be
Reclaim the butterfly
And then set it free

Fortune

Be you not
Fortune’s fool
The will of man
Is to self-determine
And not falter in superstition
Or by the fickle hand
Of idle gods
Even should it be
That pride lays traps
For unwary travellers
Yet it is so
That our lives are only
Little dreams
Unless we decide
To make of reality
What we design
Ask not what the future
Holds for you
Make the future
By your choices
And if your character
Yet pre-determines all
At least make that
Co-design
Also yours
Be not
An unwitting player
Following another’s script
Be you not
Fortune’s fool
