The foundation of thought
Needs be sturdy and strong
In vagaries not caught
Only rational belong

We should be precise
Our logic so clear
Our intellect ice
This crisp time of year

Our arguments right
Our materials sound
There’s no better sight
Than standing one’s ground

Our foundation’s belief
Is supported by acts
We avoid petty grief
By rational acts

New Year Resolutions

Happy New Year

Happy New Year (Photo credit: James Marvin Phelps)

Most years I don’t bother with new year resolutions. If I do make one, I keep it, despite all odds. One year I vowed not to eat chocolate for a whole year. Anyone who knows me would know that’s a big commitment to make. Those of my friends who knew about it took bets about how long I’d hold out before I caved and grabbed my lindt. But I proved them wrong. Once it’s made, it’s made.

So I don’t make them often. The chocolate one was for fun, in a peculiar way, and had a side benefit of some (temporary) weight loss. But usually I don’t make resolutions for fun, or even to prove I can keep them. In reality that one was probably made in a rush of temporary insanity.  🙂

But for some reason this year I have a few. It may speak to some inner disquiet, some need for internal re-order. It may be I want a challenge that isn’t about work. It might be that all the aspects of my life over 2013 have conspired to bring these aims into focus. In any case, here they are, and having made them, I have to keep them!  🙂

One: Work balance

I can’t really control how busy my job is, or the hours it demands for the most part, but I can control better how I balance my emotions to do it. In 2014 I resolve to be less emotionally invested in work and more clinical about it. I’m not saving lives. I’m not finding a cure for cancer. It just shouldn’t be taken so seriously…

Two: Blogging balance

To be honest, while I love all my WordPress friends, near the end of this year given how out of balance my work life was, blogging had come to feel like an extension of work. So it often just felt like more hours doing things to meet other’s expectations. Now I know none of you had any real expectations of me, so I’m projecting my own expectations and standards here, but that’s very human isn’t it?

So realising that, I’m going to reduce my blogging load just a little bit to get it back in perspective. In 2013 for the most part I had two poems per day scheduled ahead, and sometimes wrote more on the days themselves.  For 2014 I’m scheduling one at most per day – and maybe sometimes less if I’m struggling with Resolution One.  And while I’ll try to keep up with other blogs consistently I will allow myself to miss some posts on occasion even from favourite writers if it means the difference between balance and exhaustion. (Please don’t feel I’m neglecting you if this occurs, I will be back!!)

This resolution is also partly due to the emotional rollercoaster that was self publishing. hence the next resolution….

Three: Try traditional publishing

I’m going to make 2014 the year I first try to get an agent, and whether or not this is successful, also try to get some interest from a publishing house for my third novel Denial. I’m doing this fully aware of how difficult it is to get either an agent or a traditional publishing deal, so the resolution’s success is not based on actually achieving either, but on deliberately and strategically attempting to do so.

In the meantime, the last resolution has emerged in the past couple of days and already has me in its grip:

Four: Write a novel that is a ghost story

I’ve already started the novel and I aim to have a first draft at least well progressed by the end of my holidays in mid January, then to be dedicated to it on weekends until it is done, edited, and ready should I choose to publish it by mid 2014. I grew up on ghost stories and the works of writers like Stephen King, but I’ve never written a novel like that, so this is kind of tipping of my hat to my youth, but also a new adventure. Wish me luck!!

Do you have any resolutions for 2014? If so, please share!! 🙂 🙂

Oh, and Happy New Year!!

Flawless

It was flawless
This turn on the boards
Performance of a lifetime
Every word spoken
Trembled in perfection
Every move was grace

Why did it feel hollow
Why a ringing tone
Echoes in my ear?
Could it be exquisite
Is another word for
Soulless, perfect fear?

I wanted to be flawless
I wanted everything
To follow bidden rules
But within this strange circus
I lost the passion only
By following the form

Perhaps it’s only that
Our flaws make us human
Give to us a soul?
So essential beauty
Requires the sacrifice
We make to have control?

Caught

Caught in the middle
Emotions like tsunamis
Rising all around
Life is a riddle
Seems you need an army
Just to hold ground

Caught in a tempest
Everything extreme
And nothing makes sense
Still you try your best
Rational it seems
At your own expense

Caught by the wave
Of a growing storm
Fear you’ll wash away
Life is for the brave
Chaos now the norm
Close your eyes and pray

Choice – For Prompt 36 – Virtue

Pieter Bruegel the Elder: The Seven Virtues - ...

Pieter Bruegel the Elder: The Seven Virtues – Temperance (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

May my choice be now as ever
Of all virtues here arrayed
To find balance in true temperance
And for this alone I’ll pray

Let me never be so charitable
That I steal your chance to grow
Yet I’ll not be so parsimonious
That no gifts I may bestow

Let me never be so chaste
That true passion is denied
But make of me no libertine
Whose pleasure comes from pride

May my labours be so diligent
That all honoured aims are met
But I won’t be so obsessive
That all others I forget

Make me know the time for patience
As all seasons come and go
But allow me also speed for when
The hours pass too slow

And above all this is kindness
Let me never be so cruel
But still bless my words with honesty
Let me treat no man as fool

And for last there is humility
A true shield against the dark
But let’s not deny our beauty
Even stars must have a spark

So again for me it’s temperance
Of all the virtues that I seek
It brings order into chaos
And gives strength unto the weak.

Radar

You’re on my radar
I’m aware of you
Your communication
Is getting through
Don’t overdo it
There is no need
From this attraction
I can’t be freed

You’re in my headlights
But do not fear
I will protect you
And hold you dear
You’re on my radar
My frequency
I hope you’ll settle
Right here with me

Shooting Star

Icarus

Icarus (Photo credit: Jim Moran)

He was a shooting star
Across a desolate sky
A moment of brilliance
In a blanket of darkness
He shined briefly
Before he fell

Icarus personified
Climbing his stairway
To sunlit heaven
Before his own shining
Rivalled the fire
And burnt itself out

He was a supernova
Delicious disaster
Siren call to hundreds
A captivating black hole
Drawing us in
To the undoing
Of his nothingness
Shooting star

Dream Team

They are the dream team
They’re winners all
Talents to the extreme
Answer the call

They are the best breed
Pedigreed stars
Anything you might need
Nothing’s too far

They are the A class
Top of the grade
Never an impasse
Never dismayed

They are the dream team
They’ll always win
The rest are all downstream
While they begin

My Little Secret

Ssshhh

Ssshhh (Photo credit: Fontourist)

You’re my little secret
Am I yours?
You’re someone I can’t forget
Only because
Every time I see your face
I pause

You’re my little secret
Is this wrong?
It’s just I want connection
To belong
I promise I won’t come on
Too strong

You’re my little secret
I won’t tell
I think all your dreams and hopes
Suit me well
I hope I coax you to emerge
From your shell

Whispering

I am whispering to you
Cross the miles
I feel you hear me
I feel you know
I am whispering only
Because it’s secrets
All the stories
I would bestow

I am whispering to you
In another room
Behind closed doors
And hid within
I am hoping you hear
My secret melody
My special dreaming
Here to begin
