May as well seek for life on Mars
In these hallways only ghosts walk
And it’s been this way for years

Dust is dancing in the sunlight
And such hearts left here forsaken
Are just listless memories
And melodies to silence
And regret

May as well believe in life on Mars
Faith such a strange, sweet aberration
For this place lost deep in time

Believing someday love returns
Is just a fantasy that’s roasting
On the spit of its own fallacy
And all of this just melodies
To silence and regret

Folk Tale

Arthur Rackham, illustration to Hansel and Gretel

Story handed down through time
The moral lost in years
And tears
Caught in the rhythm and the rhyme
A tale of consequence
And fears
Folk tales linger long beyond
The time for bed
And evening tears

Could it be that once this tale
Was even truer
Than we thought?
What lost remnants here curtailed
In evening gossamer
Cruelly caught?
Folk tales linger long beyond
The lessons that
They’ve taught

Summer Fruits

Lazy days
Mid afternoon heat
Languorous looking
For a long-lost treat
Summer fruits spilling
Like gold at my feet

Hot afternoons
Spent with friends and wine
Convivial, constant
Pleasure is a crime
Summer fruits glisten
Like everything fine

Lost evening hours
The balcony replete
With benefits, bursting
The blessing complete
Summer fruits spilling
Like gold at my feet

Delusion – for Prompt 48 Escalating Humiliation

For one moment to be right
To have felt something, anything
Warm in my direction
Not some sad and lost reflection
Of a prize that’s so forbidden
From my life

Did he smile and gaze my way
Feel some attraction, some real yearning
Something sensual and longing
So at last I am belonging
To a world of those who know love
In their life?

See I blush and call his name
Across the courtyard, cross my heart
But as he frowns and looks my way
I find I’ve nothing more to say
He’s looking past me for the one that
He might love

And they’re laughing and deriding
As he turns away, indifferent
Just a delusion swift retreating
Gives my heart another beating
Fool to believe that for one moment
I’d be loved

For it’s another that he’s craving
Not my plain, my simple being
Childish taunts are here returning
Into bitter memories they’re burning
How I’ll never find a lover
In this life

Procession

The procession of my days
gives way
to slow encroaching age
Each page
is written deep in blood
and floods
my mind with memories
that tease

The procession of these hours
have powers
to make the past within
akin
to something sad and lost
A host
for a feast of darker days
displayed

The procession of my life
A knife
that cuts my bloodless skin
within
Reminds me of my choice
This voice
which bids me now to lose regret
and forget

The Home Fire is here!

And now it is available!! Briana’s new book! Time to check it out!! 🙂 🙂

Briana (Vedsted) Atkisson's avatarWhen I Became an Author

Drum roll please! The Home Fire is finally here! Whew! What a long road to publication this little book has had! First written nearly three years ago, it sat-alone and forgotten-for months and months before I began re-writing it. Then came the always fun editing stage, cover design, formatting, and publication date (okay, so maybe not exactly in that order).

So I am very glad I am finally finished with this book. It is a good feeling, to reach a finish line, for sure. Now, I can only pray that no mistakes will be brought to my attention, giving me reason to do any more work on this book. As much as I love each and every one of my books, I only want to have to re-write them once. Don’t get me wrong, spending time with the little bundles of joy is a wonderful thing…unless I’m editing for the…

Cats

Feral Cats

Feral Cats (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

The cats know
There are places
They will not go

It’s feline grace
To so completely
Know their space

The cats sense
All the losses and
The expense

If you call upon
Their sweetest care
They are long gone

The cats are
Not what they seem
They’re a dark star

Call them any name
They’ll ignore you
Just the very same

The cats know
There are places
They will not go

If you go there
They’d not tell you that
You should beware

If you go there
And you’re lost to all
They will not care

Exorcist

Church HDR

Church HDR (Photo credit: I_am_Allan)

This perfect crisp winter morn
Last autumn leaves falling
Lost, forlorn
This calling in my soul arises
Breaking like a promised dawn

A blessing given in the rain
Should all the greatest losses
Here contain
And darker thought’s dominion
Will now refrain

A battle ancient in these walls
Where whispered voices
Seductively call
A greater sacrifice entices
To give all for all

And I have now given all my life
To deathly exorcism’s
Cold, sharp knife
Again to face such darkness here
This god of strife

Within such an innocent’s cold room
Within a weaker body
Something blooms
And so it seems this litany
Again resumes

And should my life be here displayed
I am at once so certain
Yet dismayed
For faith and pure love of god
This dark parlayed

So what has protected us here then
What arises now from
The untold, when
The ancient battle must be waged
Again, again, again
