Raven

Carry me through
I hold your insignia
Against my breast
Have withstood every ritual
To bear your name
I’ve beaten down my will
But I stand here
Just the same

Give me a soul
Burnished through the deepest fire
As initiate
At this first rung I tremble
To hear your name
So many steps before me
Shall I ascend
Just the same?

Raven song heard
Its ancient call so blinding
I’ve bled it out
Upon this stony ground
To speak your name
Aloft a herald calls
And it takes me
Just the same

Life passage

Glimpses of our mortality
come too often these days
Aching joints and muscles betray
the youth we still feel sheltered
here inside
It is sobering this knowledge
of the inevitability of decay
All these little ambitions at our feet
amount to nothing on that day

Through this dark glass I espy
my own skull withered
watching back to me again
As though in bitter, lost memory
Ah yes, this creature was once me!
It seems to say and laugh
with crueller irony, and it
amounts to nothing on that day

Life passage is the same each one
No matter how we strive to prove
our individuality, it falls
to rituals and timing, as does all
From dust we come and to dust we go
No earthly shackles may we overthrow
And cries to heaven are unheard, they
amount to nothing on that day

Storm clouds

Storm clouds overhead
promise rain in tempest
Food for a parched ground
Death to new life bursting forth
Moments too soon
The nourisher and the ghoul

Raging wind and electricity
Surging through roiling mist
Covering an aching sky
Watching from the porch we sigh
Nature’s purest majesty
This parade just passing by

In the folds we see a face
For moments then it’s lost again
To thunder lightning and to wind
A hidden spy
Or secret friend
Diving in these depths

Prophecy

Between the choices
Lies a fault line
Of probability
Nature tends
In downward spirals
Into entropy
Yet new life
Can struggle through
So valiantly

In the darkness
Are the cracks
Where light is found
Glowing weak
But building strong
Touching all around
Falling fast
Through the air
To the bitter ground

Where is wisdom
Where is knowledge
And where certainty?
Where does friendship
Fall and falter
Into enmity
Where the power
Where the source
Of true prophecy?

Moon

You watch over me
And my memories
As I sleep you caress
The very sky
And slither within
The air I breathe
To bring me succour
And delight

You hover above
Shedding your light
Paving my way
Through shadows too deep
My spectral angel
You whisper your name
In case I might hear you
One time in my sleep

Eagle At Night

The eagle flies at night
Alone among the stars
He soars
The coverage of the dark
His ancient instinct knows
And follows like a light

The eagle swims in dark
A message held so deep
Within
A herald before dawn
To blacker depths he goes
Carrying his spark

Meteorite

You crashed into me
Like a meteorite
Destroying my world

Your impact was like
A thunderous force
A deathly design

The scars that you left
Are deep in my bone
A tempest unfurled

A crater, a gulf
The death of all love
And everything fine

A Wish For You

I wish for you
The softest summer light
Dancing as a butterfly
Upon the perfect flowers
And even in life’s showers
The gentlest of rain

I wish for you
Innocence unencumbered
By life’s too bitter days
Instead a golden path
Where you may joyous laugh
And kiss away all pain

I wish for you
A perfect love and light
A smile that never ends
Warm and true embrace
An angel’s beauteous grace
So in peace you may remain

From The Light

Into this world we stumble
From the light
Eyes adjusting
To the darker hues
Of humanity
Become accustomed
To the heavy weight
Of flesh and bone
Fragments escaping
Yearning for a
Far too quickly
Forgotten home

Like a child we
Stumble blindly
In this forest
Teeming with life
And broken stone
The shadows claim us
As proportion
Light and shade
Sinews stretching
Breath we’re claiming
Far too quickly
Are we made

The Coming

She is coming
Born of ravens
Psychopomp descending
To the terrain

Breath is icy
Eyes are fire
Bleak and lost
Are her domain

Ancient creature
Youthful beauty
Brings despair
And scarring flame

Few will know her
Few can view her
Even less may
Speak her name
