Aging

Each day so silent
Near imperceptible
The lines around my eyes
grow deeper,
more sustained
My body
just that bit more stiff
on rising
My recovery
just sightly slower
from exertion
Aging is a stealth bomb
Creeping up on you,
its countdown ticking silent
till it explodes in full force
And I find myself
surprised to be
in my second half century
Disoriented by passing years
gone too quickly
to recognise

Ghazal 3

These armies marched with red cross splashed on white
Through death and darkness salvaging the light

The artist eschews greys and dimmer shades
To birth his newest canvas coloured bright

The blind man touches truth with senses sharp
A keener eye than would be his by sight

A mother cradles child who’s wept all day
To find a deeper refuge in the night

Punch drunk, the boxer stands to best his foe
So weary now but will not yield the fight

The poet delves the deepest reach of soul
To form beguiling words to give delight.

Endings – Five Sentence Fiction

With thanks to Owlish Thoughts for the idea of the five sentence fiction form 🙂

The burden of love freely given but which I cannot return weighs so heavy on me, dragging me down further into my silence. I want to scream at him, to tell the truth, that I cannot love him, and break down the earnest loyalty he daily proves. I want to say ‘the day that changed everything I was not coming to you, but leaving you’. It would take away his guilt which he wears now like a beloved hair shirt and replace it with knowledge of betrayal. But I cannot do this because I ran too fast and between us, instead of my choice, came the accident, and I cannot now speak truth from my coma.

Dark Nights

Dark Knights begin their marching
In a bleak parade
A modern-day Hamlet
By obsession is betrayed
His every fevered thought
Through the media relayed

By the lake they watch and wait
For the Dark Knights passing by
And could this be Ophelia
Who in lilied water lies?
Such love to pass un-noticed
Till invisible, its dies

Dark Knights tether their horses
Pour wine and raise the toast
And look upon their master
This pale and vengeful ghost
For those who brood on history
Are captured by it most

Dark Knights inspire an author
To pen a timeless play
And all the themes of honour
Resonate to present day
But Dark Knight’s hidden secrets
No poetry betrays.

Vitriol

You go through me
Like a dose of salts
Your opinions
And decisions
Bleed me dry

You’re like the cure
To your own disease
Mere proximity to you
Inspires a purge

If your impact
Could be calibrated
And bottled
To achieve weight loss
I’d market you
And make a fortune
From your effectiveness
To expel
And repel

Witch Hunt

like to drown

like to drown (Photo credit: Aimanness Photography)

Raven hair
Splayed in water
Desperate web
See how
This gypsy’s daughter’s
Fortunes ebb

Older gods
Spells and chanting
Drag her down
One salvation
They are granting
If she drowns

Weighted cords
Tie her feet
Clasp her hands
Her lungs exploding
Terror complete
She yet withstands

Test the witch
See her power
Should she float
Witness, see her
In this hour
Wear death’s coat.

The Other Woman

Love Affair teaser

Love Affair teaser (Photo credit: Michael D. Dunn)

Lipsticks stains should be
A cheap ruse
Beneath her
She carries the aroma
Of hidden sin
Mid range hotels
Frequented at lunch hours
Stolen moments
Exotic tastes
Making this life
A living cliché
She looks in this golden mirror
And wonders
How came I here?
And on what strange morning
Did I awake
As the other woman?

The House

Haunted House

Haunted House (Photo credit: Sean MacEntee)

A lonely house
Upon a hill
Hid every secret
Every ill

Knock on the door
Or ring the bell
The path to heaven
Leads to hell

And all the mortals
Who dwell within
Lost their innocence
Soaked in sin

Lost Love

A dream of you
An embrace
An earnest, long kiss
Chaste, pressed against my cheek
Suggestive of more
Brings memories
Of what might have been
And echoes
Of my greatest loss

Faux Diet

I sweat and strain to reach a weight
Do not accept my body’s fate
To curve and bloom where I’d concave
A silhouette that I’d create

I know the ways I should behave
The regimen and calories saved
To see the scales will treat me right
Find body suits that I could brave

Some friends of mine are lean, are slight
Their forms are such a beauteous sight
Their fashion flows with grace and ease
In fabrics firm and patterns bright

To dream of this myself I tease
And yet I still eat as I please
The diet gods won’t be appeased
And so in lusher form I freeze.
