The Quietest Time of Night

New Moon

New Moon (Photo credit: spitfirelas)

Waves on the shoreline
Beat back endless
Cresting peaks
Crash on indifferent sands
Above the moon
Shines pale, strange light
At the quietest time of night

Footprints washed away now
Travellers passing unseen
Fleeting, softly
Traversing in silence
Above the stars are dying
Though we still see their light
At the quietest time of night

City far away now
Feels the tide’s
Strong pull
Even in this melee
Above distant street cacophony
This agelessness shines bright
At the quietest time of night

I love this, it’s peaceful and a wee bit eerie. And I love the repetition on the last line of each verse.

I wanted to come back and comment on this since I didn’t have time the first time I read it. This is filled with beautiful imagery and lovely prose. The line that gets me the most is “Footprints washed away now,” which is such a deep statement. It’s as if the action of walking on the beach is recorded for an instant, we can remember it, we can see the footprints that we were there, but then, in a moment, they’re gone. Taken by the waters we enjoyed reflecting on when on that beach. Wow. Wow…
