Age

Aging

Aging (Photo credit: K. Kendall)

Age does not always wither
It may release
Stiffer joints have less dominion
With the passing of care
Time itself
Does not lend wisdom
But irradiates
Some lessons learned
Freedom becomes
Another term for
Relinquishing what was yearned

So much more peaceful now
Simpler wants
A comfortable and quiet home
A few close friends
Time alone
Does not deny one’s youth
But eliminates
Vexations found there
Balance becomes
The lesser battle
To agree what is fair

Mountains

Mountain

Mountain (Photo credit: @Doug88888)

The mountains of morning
With sunlight are strewn
The mountains of midnight
Are blessed by the moon
The mountains of evening
With a silver twilight
The mountains of midday
Impossibly bright

The mountains of memory
Are vast and so deep
The mountains of regret
Have such secrets to keep
The mountains of loving
Stretch far beyond time
The mountains of yearning
Are both sad and sublime

Unforgiven

Unforgiven

Unforgiven (Photo credit: lrargerich)

I am that creeping rage
That splinters across doorways
Breaks homes
With one sibilant breath
Tears hearts
Like cloth
To bandage the wounds
I make

Something was wrong
In my chemistry
Leaving certain choices
Impossible for me
What beauteous deliverance
Is the capacity for forgiveness
Not to me
Not from me

You may shriek your pain
Outside my door
I will not let you in
You can cry and try
To reclaim what you lost
But it has left me
Totally

I am but a mirror
Reflecting back the ugliness
Of a distorted face to you
I am an acolyte
Of darker gods
And from their circles
Am I bidden
And so you must
Remain eternally
Unforgiven

Trust

Despair

Despair (Photo credit: ~Aphrodite)

I hear the mournful song of lost regret
Melodious and precise
It hovers above me
Like a falling angel in flight

Each word, each lyric
Speaks of years
And choices broken underfoot
Trampled by fear

Darkened pathway is blocked
No mercy or deliverance
Haunts these hallways
Lost in circumstance

This perfect chalice is corrupted
Frozen fear and darkened lust
Angered visage and spiteful words
Destroyed the fragile flower of trust

I cannot accept you
No matter how you may yearn and try
I have no choice left to me now
Crestfallen, unable to lie

Unable to face the bitterest truth
Forever broken and separate
Sickness pollutes this form
Bereft and disconsolate

At such moments avert
Your eyes, there is no sanction here
There is no reprieve or forgiveness
In this or any year
I can give no reprieve or forgiveness
In this or any year

Drink From Me

Pale rose

Pale rose (Photo credit: @Doug88888)

Drink from me
For what we’ve been
Take from me
All you have seen

Let the inspiration flow from your veins
Let the shadowed darkness, linger, remain

Drink from me
And from your shame

Feast your heart
Upon my words
As though now
You might be heard

I remember once on seeing your face
Knew you’d scar with memories, never erased

Feast your heart
Your words replaced

Take this rhyme
It’s meant for you
Nothing else
I give that’s true

If in some strange time we once more could smile
With a restful heart could tarry a while

Take this rhyme
And be beguiled.

(This is an homage to a favourite melody/song from Les Mis…the Drink to Me song..so the melody and lyric form was floating in my head for weeks and this poem came out of it. 🙂  )

Haiku Pondering

A brief sentence here
to say nothing but the fact
that these words are brief

Words that sound so wise
but in the end say little
are poetry’s thief

I just love a phrase
Follow where it leads me to
perhaps just a dream

So what strikes you now
as truth, may not always be
quite what it may seem

I Made a Promise Once

Promise...

Promise… (Photo credit: M Reza Faisal)

I made a promise once
Unconditional and pure
I made it when I thought I knew
At a time when I was sure
But life eroded all this strength
Till now I’m insecure

I made a promise once
When commitment seemed for free
I made it when I cared or you
And you seemed to care for me
But in the finer print I found
Deeper cause to be set free

I made a promise once
In the days when I believed
I made it so your heart and soul
From darkness be reprieved
But saw instead the dark was you
Just emptiness received

I made a promise once
For years you held me to my vow
I made it when I dreamt and felt
Many things I can’t feel now
I pray that time will empathise
And redemption still allow

Leaf

Autumn Leaves

Autumn Leaves (Photo credit: Kameramanden)

A moment
Stretched into years
A sigh
Smothered by tears
A glance
Drawn to a gaze
A child
Lost in a maze

And you
Darkness and light
Shadows
Waft through the night
A lie
Spoken as truth
Evidence
But never proof

And me
Wondering why
Intrigued
Obsessed then to try
Not lose
But lost in the game
Emerged
Never the same

A moment
Not what it seemed
A nightmare
Born of a dream
A leaf
Tossed and turned in the stream

Just a leaf
Tossed and turned in the stream

First Law

First law
Is do no harm
Not do as you would do
The will always bows to the heart
And through this truth may blossom unadorned
All the rest is just clever lies
Tricks in words that lay traps
To sway you from
First law

Nowhere to Begin

A procession of futility
A game that no-one wins
A choice for mere brutality
Atonement for no sins

A grasp at last for infamy
If only to be known
A soloist in symphony
Pretender to the throne

Lost voice on the edge of death
Last singer for the song
Last truth withered on the breath
Last chance to belong

Blinking eye has seen it pass
Whispered on the wind
Only shards of broken glass
Nowhere to begin
