I do not believe
That opposites attract
We like what reminds us
Of the people that we want to be
In moments we can still believe
We are

I walk alone
Do not desire extroverts
Their energy so wild
And cavalier it almost hurts
I like a quieter type
Like me

I’ve never found
That opposites are drawn
Like magnets in each other’s field
In fact I’ve seen it oft revealed
The sparks that fly are darker
Than love could ever be

Why do they say
That opposites attract?
Just scientific energy
Of physical polarity
It isn’t what we want to be
It isn’t what we are
By far

Wonderful poetic expression, Helen. Someone once suggested that opposites attract only on the material/physical level. “Like attracts like” on the spiritual/soul level. And this is exactly what you are revealing here! Beautifully written. Thank you for sharing.

  2. Oh wonderful! And I couldn’t agree more! 🙂

  3. What an interesting dilemma you raise here. We are all taught that opposites attract. My brother and his wife of well over thirty years are the best example I know. Certainly sparks fly there but they are so into each other. I can arguments back and forward on this one Helen.
In Stanza three line five: ‘It isn’t what want to be’ should there be an I in between ‘what’ and ‘want’ ?

  4. Opposites, in my experience, have nightmarish results. Loved this, Sis! As always, you are spot on.

  5. Gorgeously introspective Helen. Sam and I have some similarities we are weird and introverted, depressive types but in other ways we are very different. I am abstract, he is concrete. I am intuitive, he is logical. He is diplomatic, I am without tact lol He is a leader, I am the lone wolf. He is into math and computers I like literature and philosophy. I like to watch sad movies, he doesn’t lol Luckily we both think action movies are boring. I like the contrasts
