Halloween

We stood like sentinels out on the green
She said we won’t last beyond Halloween
The promises made were broken and yet
We shared of such truths we’ll never forget
The witching hour will see this arise
A perfect possession behind ancient eyes
A sacrifice made in blood and in fear
Anything less just won’t do around here
I heard at the pantomime held last year
Half of their number were lost, disappeared

So what is it now we should think or believe
Dance with the devil and have no reprieve
It’s not so unbidden or hypnotised
Your youth and your beauty are highly prized
Follow the piper to pay this dark fee
All that you ever have wanted to be
We stood in our terror out on the green
She laughed, ‘You won’t last beyond Halloween,
There’s devils here waiting just in between
To show you wonders no others have seen’.
