Fringes

I live on the fringes
I hide in the dark
My home is in alleyways
or deep in the park

I breathe contradiction
The web of my words
are born for confusion
I am the absurd

I’ll never be like you
We are not the same
You’re just some dear kindling
while I am the flame

I live on the fringes
I’ll never be seen
You’re here in the moment
while I’m in between

The White Palace

English: White Palace gate, Belgrade

English: White Palace gate, Belgrade (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

“Delirium is good for you”
Said the master of the halls
It takes you further, further in
It mixes terror now with sin
It shows the novice how to begin
With summer nights and lace
In the White Palace

The numinous is here
They advertised this long ago
For those who with their God commune
Are best to come here to this room
And through surrender they resume
Their primordial place
In the White Palace

“The truest blood will fall”
He told us as he laid us down
And nothing here is what it seems
You live in nightmares, pray for dreams
You’ll find simplicity in extremes
And if you’re worthy, grace
In the White Palace

Mirror’s Face

Woman Standing in Front of a Mirror

Woman Standing in Front of a Mirror (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Perfect oval, pale
Deft touches of blush and powder
All the flaws are now erased
Simple here, the mirror’s face

Arching eyebrows peak
With questions yet unasked
Wisdom lost, it’s been replaced
Conformity here, the mirror’s face

Lips that rarely smile
Lest they stretch the contoured form
In our lines our lives are traced
Nothing here, in the mirror’s face

Hair line softly falls
Locks to balance perfect symmetry
The golden mean of depth and space
Are all that’s required, the mirror’s face

Jekyll

English: Artwork by Charles Raymond Macauley for the 1904 edition of The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. Publisher: New York Scott-Thaw (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I am the Jekyll to your Hyde
I am the muse that stirs your pen
I am the question deep inside
You are the now, I am the then

I am the kindness, you are the cruel
I am the judgement, you the crime
You pull the strings for me, poor fool
You are stasis, I am time

I am the Jekyll to your Hyde
I live in fear that you’ll arise
I am forsaken, you are pride
Seeking to gaze now through my eyes

Luminescence

luminescence

luminescence (Photo credit: eye of einstein)

They call you mystery
Arching from the void
Of limitless possibility
A face beyond time
Conscious thought or design
Your call an ancient melody
In abstract tongue

Such light falls across the sky
Luminescence from your eye

They call you alchemy
Black rose turns to red
Then white
A phoenix from the ashes, rises
With wings of pure light
And from this deep nigredo born
Regret, remembrance, delight

They say in heaven when you fell
The angels knew this very well

They call you adversary
Judge of faith and boundless awe
Rising from the chaos
Of all the choices gone before
Right hand of God or foe
It’s all perspective here
Within the ebb and flow
Of luminescence

Guinevere’s Lament

The Parting of Sir Lancelot and Queen Guinever...

The Parting of Sir Lancelot and Queen Guinevere (1874) albumen print 34.8 x 28.6 cm. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

You will know my name
As betrayal, infamy
Great love forsaken for greater passion
And a hidden intimacy
Remembered in myth and legend
And by scholars here discussed
As though this did not happen
To just people, to just us

Songs will be written
Of my folly and shame
Magic and ambition
Are sad heralds to blame
Remembered in the hearts of those
That never knew us, never will
Recalled in bitter tears
And the blood here spilled

I was sister to the moon
And he the dazzling sun
I bled passion but did not know
What we’d begun
And what choice in any case
In the world of mythology?
One must take the dark queen’s part
To let the story be.

So Many

So many years since I
thought of a man’s gaze
as the gaze of a man

So many games missed,
not seeing that the maze
was part of the plan

How many glances now
have I passed by which
should not be bypassed?

How many broken saved
from my steadfast solitude
if instead I held fast?

So many years since I
thought of a man’s regard
as the regard of a man

So many words missed
with beginnings that ended
before they began

All This And More

The mercurial mind of one
who entertained
Vibrant words and articulate hands
dancing before me
Drawing laughter from the depths,
all life’s absurdities
All this and more
he was to me

The one most trusted and true
who guarded
against the wrath and the need of others
dancing around me
In the quiet of my life
he came and found me
All this and more
he was to me

The fatal flaw of weakness and fear,
words unspoken
Trying to coax them from my mouth,
dancing before me
What was it then
did he implore me?
All this and more
he was to me

Tuxedo Nights

Tuxedo Jacket

Tuxedo Jacket (Photo credit: VancityAllie)

I no longer yearn for tuxedo nights
Glamour holds no sway on me
Visceral hunger for elegantry
Is frozen as a winter strewn lake

I would no longer hold Gatsby’s hand
Give him shelter in the jazz age
Swinging softly to the band
I would not seek from wealth nor fashion
Some sign of the Creator’s hand

Not born to wealth its beauty fascinated
A child pressed to a store window
Yearning for within, the hordes I’d overthrow
To hold that precious gift for but one moment
To parlay with the elite and finally know
And know….

There’s nothing wise in tuxedo nights
The flash of the camera lens
Is artifice, just dull pretence
I will not gather in these luxurious halls
Never gaze on masterworks up on their walls
This is where petty ambition turns, and falls
And falls…..
