Mystery Road

I followed you down this mystery road
Early morning the grey of the light
was the sun battling moon
And the frost and fog of wonder
settled on my resolute form
as I followed in your steps

The preternatural ambience
was a cloak upon my shoulders
I was a weary traveller although
my journey had just now commenced
I followed you although I did not know
a reason why, except I said
I said I would, like promises made
too late in the night to every make sense

And who were you on this mystery road
dark traveller just out of my sight?
I followed in your footsteps bright
to a morning I could never see
with eyes accustomed to my world
this other place and your other face
floating back to gaze at me

I shall never return, the way I’ve gone
is burnt out behind me and disappears
within this mist that swallows all my fears
and makes me brave through innocence
I know my words make little sense
but still I follow, never free
from this strange place and your strange face
floating back to gaze at me
