Sweltering dusty, lonesome streets
On this hazy mid afternoon
Somewhere a jukebox is playing
Jangling, discordant tunes
It was June

You said let’s plan an escapade
A once in a lifetime reverie
A special moment in the sun
Punctuated by its brevity
Sheer levity

I said our crime is only
An accident of subtle choice
On the run now to infinity
Fleeing even God’s own voice
We rejoice

Young and reckless hearted
Freedom is just a car
This highway where we started
No matter where we are
We’re shooting stars

Spreadeagled on the night sky
With such secrets we can’t tell
We’re chasing our lost innocence
Just like Lucifer we fell
To hell

‘Neath blistering sky still running
These roads too bleak and long
Despite our strength we’re headed
To where we most belong
Swan song

For mindlovemisery’s prompt at: http://mindlovemisery.wordpress.com/2013/12/22/prompt-35-holiday-stories/

This prompt was a challenge. These days to me the holidays just mean quiet and peacefulness, and I couldn’t think of a way of writing about that in an interesting manner, so I’ve chosen fiction instead, with a Thelma and Louise-esque type of road trip to oblivion…the ultimate holiday into infinity….. 🙂 🙂

  1. This prompt is challenging for me too as I don’t have a clear memory of well anything lol I love your take dangerous and exciting!

  2. I thought of a Thelma and Louise angle as i was reading yours Helen. Well done, I like the idea of the swan song and the reference to ‘Just like Lucifer we fell.’

  3. Malcolm Miller says:

Reminded me of that ghastly murder on the highway where some psychopath killed one of a couple and the other just managed to escape.
I gave up Christmas years ago; I don’t give presents, send cards, or attend parties. A quiet meal with a couple of special friends is all.

  4. Wow. I love your use of language and imagery. Very moving.

  5. biggerthanalasagna says:

    I liked it.

  6. Skye says:

I loved the Thelma and Louise take on it!! 🙂
