Incongruent Fur

The thing was
It was incongruent fur
It tipped me off
To an otherwise
Effortless guise
The hair wet and slicked back
And so hurriedly dressed
But across shivering shoulders
This fur jacket was pressed

The thing was
It was incongruent fur
She didn’t look the type
To spend the cash
To achieve such dash
Just a little street urchin
Clothed in raiment so fine
I still saw this imposter
Yet it was hard to define

Except the thing
The thing about her
Was a sense of bargain basement
Teamed with incongruent fur

Inspired by a photo in a fashion magazine of a young, defiant girl in a fur coat – this looked kind of odd and out of place so inspired the poem.  This is not a statement of support for fur coats in general or at all….

  1. I had to smile at the line ‘bargain basement….incongruent fur’ I can well imagine the image you used. Well done as always Helen.

    • Thanks Michael – it was a photo in a fashion magazine of a young girl in very punkish type clothes but then a lovely expensive looking fur, and I thought to myself, wow, that’s a bit incongruent, and then the poem was born. She did look pretty though, just a bit odd, and I worried a bit after I posted the poem that it might seem a bit cruel, and it wasn’t meant that way, it was just such a striking and provocative image. So yes, probably very like the one you imagined!! 🙂 🙂

Leafed through a magazine at the hairdressers….Sigh….nothing. You amaze. 🙂 xxxx

    • Thanks Skye – the trick is just to jot down the words they use, then stop looking at the magazine and see what the words suggest separate to that.. 🙂 Every once in a while its the imagery that inspires but I find for the most part the words take me to things completely unrelated to the pictures that accompany them. 🙂

All I know now is Miley Cyrus is everywhere….and I am really clueless to all things pop culture. I am officially old. I was finding myself sighing at every page….I think I even heard myself say, “Kids these days.” Ack!! I have become my mother.

      • LOL ..it happened to us all. I recommend fashion magazines for inspiration rather than celebrity ones. 🙂
