I have never had this feeling
What it is to just belong
I’ve an independent streak
Sometimes stubborn, sometimes strong
So I guess you see bemusement
As you look upon my face
I’ve been alone in certain solitude
Never seeking to embrace
Whether this was from my family
Or from school or work confines
In each situation I could be
By singularity defined
I’m not sure I know the origin
Some early wound that I still feel
But it did not yet occur to me
It could be something that might heal
All these years I’ve taken solace
In my precision and my pride
And all sense of deeper unity
Was just a thought to over-ride
But in this, your gentle welcoming
Comes an unfamiliar song
And I find a deeper friendship brings
Surprising need to just belong
