Dark Moon Water

Bourbon Street

Bourbon Street (Photo credit: Travis S.)

Dark moon water on cobblestones
Coloured faces like the light
Passing through a jazz drenched scene
Disappearing in the night
A solo saxophonist
Croons a gentle, mournful cry
As partners in a strange parade
Join their hands and pass him by

There’s a tremor in the depthless night
The stars are blinking out
If the horsemen ride along these streets
If the madmen rise to shout
Blood red glimmer shines from doorways
Flowing syncopated beat
The ghosts of time are all arising
While the living must retreat

Dark moon water on cobblestones
Shines a dull and sombre glow
Leading down to the ninth circle
Should the worthy dare to go
Just one moment in this jazz riff
Discordant rhythms claim their prize
To prepare us for the death of life
So the new morning may arise.

Such beautiful images. I’ve always wanted to go to NOLA, and after reading this it makes my desire to go even more sure. You’ve certainly capture the true essence of the place. Again, beautiful, Helen!

Hi Helen, your words have a flowing dance to them and the imagery leaps off the screen. I felt that way reading the Pied Piper too. Thank you for getting in touch, I love reading new poetry!

  5. Wow, I could actually hear that mournful saxophone in the background. Well done!

I really, really liked this one. The subject matter. The wording. The ways the words flowed together. This is one of my favorite poems of yours 🙂
