‘Break bread with me’
Said Death
Pulling out a seat
To rest his weary form
‘I’ve ridden long
Into the night’ he said
‘I’ll ride much longer
Ere the dawn’
‘Have you come for me?’
I politely asked
Not regretful for
Such a loss
‘Not for you just yet’
Said this reaper, grim
‘No need yet
To bear the cost’
‘So if you must ride
And will ride again
May I yet enquire
Who you pursue?’
He just shook his head
Cleared a rasping throat
‘Just be glad tonight
It isn’t you.’
‘Drink your wine with me’
Extolled shadowed Death
‘I am thirsty
To my soul’
And in that time
As he hung his head
I divined the price
of his role
‘All will flee from you
As you yet approach
All will wither
And none your friend’
‘Yes’ said Death ‘It’s true
But no matter this
All must meet with me
In the end’
‘When you come for me
On some other night
Will you yet recall
This strange commune?’
‘I promise you I will’
Said my deathly guest
‘Whether it beΒ far away
OrΒ soon’.

one of the greatest i’ve yet read.
Thank you, it’s actually one I’m particularly pleased with too..just seemed an odd idea when the first few lines came to me then it took on a life of its own (no irony intended given its about death). π
Ooo, I like this! Sound’s familiar too. π
Thank you! π
Loved this! drinking with death… I want more of this… What conversation you could have
Thank you so much, yes, the character of death is an endlessly fascinating one! A real conversation with him/her would be intriging indeed! π
I agree… I think this is my favorite of yours so far! Bravo!
Thank you, your kindness is as ever much appreciated! π
Aahh, to achieve at least a little familiarity with death…
Yes, particularly without going too far and actually being dead!! π
This is really interesting and atmospheric, you get all kinds of pictures and feelings off it!
Thank you! It came to me kind of strangely as some poems do, partly without much conscious thought…perhaps that’s why it reads that way, that or the topic!! π
Goosebumps! I almost stood up from my seat to applaud. This is the stuff I’ve been yearning to read. You are one hell of a poet!
Thank you so much!! That is so kind of you!! π
