Self-Delusion Vs Self-Knowledge

We only examine
Truth we don’t like
We readily accept
The lies that we do
We look for veracity
In our depth of response
We think if we feel it
Then somehow it’s true

If we find ourselves anxious
We turn from the sight
Of evidence that lurks
In a world we’d deny
We search for the patterns
That affirm our belief
Re-arrange testimony
To a comfortable lie

But would we be better
Or somehow more strong
If we canvassed our views
In a more thorough way?
Is blindness, unseeing
A comfort or foe?
Is a night full of darkness
Somehow less than the day?

And even beyond this
Can we truly know
When such moments entrap us
In our favoured world view?
Oh would that we find it
That elusive, lost path
That leads not to denial
But embraces what’s true.

  1. I like the comparison/contrast in this piece…. words of wisdom πŸ˜‰

  2. How very true! That constant battle – to catch myself out accepting things that sound nice, but are not based on truth! An excellent poem Helen! πŸ˜€

    • Thank you so much – it is a struggle to get that self awareness thing right, and sometimes I wonder how one would ever know if one had actually achieved that! …Hence the poem πŸ™‚ As ever, your support is much appreciated!

Here you very righteously explored the common human nature….and there’s something we all prone to do but many of us never been caught up to that….these are the ‘comfortable lies’, the synthetics that surround us I guess for our earthly happiness…..sometimes it’s happiness that all matters, and for that the truth whatever it is, lacks its appeal…
