First Crush

When I was sixteen
I saw a face
I will never forget
Upon his skin
Not yet a trace
Of time’s sweet savagery yet
I yearned for him
But spoke no words
All these secrets that I kept
At sixteen

When I was seventeen
He gave to me a book
He spoke my name
Just like a kiss
And from this simple look
Ignites eternal flame
Our tastes it seemed
Can weave a web
And in these dreams comes blame
At seventeen

When I was eighteen
We parted company
The end of school days
And different lives
Was our first entropy
Dreams withered in a haze
If he once knew
What he was to me
In my silence, he’d be amazed
At eighteen

He’s probably some fat bloke now with a bald head and gout.

    • I don’t think he is actually. I saw him about ten years ago in a shopping mall – in another city to the one we were living in when we were young – and I was so struck by him again I couldn’t go near him but could see from a distance he had retained that beauty to that day, so unless the following decade laid that to waste I think he’s still probably good looking….sigh…then I also became friends with a woman a number of years ago who was his teacher at the school we shared and she said he was this lovely, brilliant boy…I said ‘ wish you’d said he was a little bastard’.. then it wouldn’t feel so much like a loss, LOLOL. 🙂

Just captured that girlie first crush love perfectly! Took me back. Nice!

  3. Ah, I remember that. Same age, too.

  4. Helen, I loved this. I had a crush on someone through those years, as well. I often wonder about him. This prompted a lovely trip down memory lane with my fat bloke….lololol Sorry Brian cracks me up!!

    ❤ so relateable!

  6. oh, how brilliant! I’ve only had a crush on one guy who noticed me back, and we were around each other for about a month, but we hardly ever spoke. this brought back such fond memories. thank you Helen!

  7. I feel that some relationships truly cannot be named, but it doesn’t mean that they don’t exist. Loved the way you expressed your feelings about your first crush. I believe it’s beautiful because you knew your feelings toward him but it’s painful because you could never find it within you, to convey the same and as you drifted apart from each other, you certainly didn’t wish to remember him as, just your ‘first crush’ because I’m sure, he meant more to you than that. But sometimes, no matter how you truly feel inside, you have to give that feeling a name, for the world to understand. 🙂 These are purely my ideas 🙂 great work, helenvalentina!

I am always liking stories of first loves and crushes. Some last which is so amazing. But our young hearts are so impressionable. We have permanent memories of this. I worked for four years between teaching middle school and preschool children with disabilities, as an Activities Director at a nursing home. I wish I had taken notes because one of their “favorite memories” was of first loves. Nicely written!
