Penance

Sweat on the brow
A visual sign
Of inner resolve

Too many times
Weakened and crippled
At the last hurdle

Greed, rapaciousness
Dissolving within
Sweat and shame

Sacrificial offering
Burn out the soul
Eternal pyre

For one brief moment
As sinews stretch
You raise your eyes

And know forgiveness
Not of the other
But of yourself

This poem makes me want to be in that “one brief moment” of knowing forgiveness of self. One day soon I will be there…I just know it! Thank you for the hope that your poem gave me this evening.

I forgive … ME … perhaps one of the hardest things we ever do. Awesome poem.
