The Other Woman

Lipsticks stains should be
A cheap ruse
Beneath her
She carries the aroma
Of hidden sin
Mid range hotels
Frequented at lunch hours
Stolen moments
Exotic tastes
Making this life
A living cliché
She looks in this golden mirror
And wonders
How came I here?
And on what strange morning
Did I awake
As the other woman?

Well done. This could have been a short story or even a novel … But look how you told it with the economy and grace of a poem.

  4. What jumps out at me are your words, “How came I here?”

Can anyone of us truly answer this question? What was the extent of responsibility we took about the direction of our life’s path? What else could we have done as we reached each fork of choice?

    Lovely verse indeed.

    • Thank you so much – yes, the path our decisions take us on make us as much as we make them I think, and so subtely it can be hard to see how we arrive where we do. 🙂

Over the course of the years, I’ve always wondered what “Stolen moments” meant. I finally understand now after seeing neighbors divorce. The man was having a torrid affair. He sneaked around town with another woman figuring everything was okay. His wife finally caught him. The marriage ended. If only he drank water from his fountain instead of drinking it from another. He’d still be married.

    Thanks for the deep thoughts!

    • Thank you so much – yes I think that these sort of relatinships do damage one way or another, to at least one and often more than one party involved. A complex situation indeed. 🙂

This one is AMAZING! One of the best ones I have read in a long time.

  7. I agree with the others. This is a great story. My only expression is for a longer version. What you wrote was enough, but the topic is so compelling that it leaves you wanting more. Very nice!
