Cicada song, crackling
Soul sound in this night
Preternatural stillness
Source of odd and dread delight
Deeper fear now working
Burrowing within
An aged mind here reflecting
On deeds and words replete with sin
Cicada rhythm constant
A metronome of sort
Within this dark night canopy
A melody of memories caught
Iridescent sound waves
Shimmer through the air
Till the last regret of life
Haunts the weary listener there.

Thank you so much, very kind of you! 🙂
Mmmm, deep. Wow, gets one thinking! Fabulous job!! 🙂
Thank you…the ironic thing is the thing that inspired me was not being able to get to sleep one night without earplugs because of the cicadas outside, but when I started writing, this whole other story, much darker than not getting sleep, emerged…inspiration is an odd thing!! 🙂
Lovely piece. You have indeed captured the droning rhythm that is suggestive of mesmerising you into a trance state for your revelations. The assonance from your words reinforces the whole aural theme. I must have read this at least ten times tonight – it’s really very good. Well done.
Thank you as ever for your feedback and support. I really appreciate the time you spend and your considered comments, more than I can express! 🙂
I remember hearing the cicada as a kid growing up in Italy. I’ll never forget how I wondered what the sound was until my mom told me it was a cicada. Of course, I didn’t know what it was. I had to look it up. I now appreciate all things cidada…including your beautiful poem.
Thank you so much, so very kind! 🙂
While I was reading this, I imagined the scenario. And it somehow made me think of your avatar, with the dragon.
I enjoyed reading this piece of work!
Ah, yes, the whole winged creatures type of thing…hadn’t thought of that! Thank you so much for your kind words! 🙂
