Watching a television documentary
On my first favourite band
I am reminded
Stunned once more
Before the artistry and poetry
Of this mercurial man indeed
The generosity they mention
Was always in his glittering eyes
But more the beauty of a voice
That comes not once a generation
But once a century
Freddie Mercury
Hearing again of his demise
For a moment heartbroken
Over someone I never knew
I recall playing
‘Who wants to live forever?’
On repeat
The day of the sad news
Now more than two decades later
These passed by so quickly
I return to the feeling in an instant
Tear stained eyes
His achingly beautiful face
His glorious, incandescent voice
Why are the Greats so often
Shadowed by tragedy
Stolen from us too soon?
What bitter, jealous god decrees
Only this much, and no more?
See his friends speak
Of vultures circling his death
When all we should have seen
Was a life glorified
It breaks my heart
This breaks my heart
Sheer beauty taken prematurely
And we are left only to wonder
What treasure may yet have been ours
Had he been allowed
To stay.
Vale Freddie

Freddie will always be in my heart too! All those teenage years of wonderful songs, stupidly thought he’d be there into my old age, but you think like that when you’re 15! I love the tribute to him at the Olympics this year, I shared a copy to my music page, so I could watch it whenever I wanted, but it makes me cry very time I watch it!! And how can we forget ‘Who wants to live forever?’ Would never have gone to see the film if the music hadn’t have been included! Lovely memories!
Suzy 😀
Thank you – obviously we are kindred spirits! I didn’t actually know they did a tribute to Freddie at the Olympics so I will be checking that out. Just like you I wouldn’t have seen Highlander except for the involvement of Queen. 🙂
Lovely, lovely!! Well done!!!
Thank you, much appreciated! 🙂
Truly one of the greatest voices to EVER grace a microphone… Steve Perry (from Journey) is my favorite vocalist, from a musical standpoint, but Freddie had the most amazing set of pipes. The guy could sing anything. He left us too soon. His voice (and heart) still had songs to sing.
Hi! 🙂 i agree so much! Voices like his are so rare! And I think he had so much more creativity in him – life can be very cruel sometimes.
He was definitely taken from us too soon. What a voice.
