Bridesmaid Rites

Bridesmaids

Bridesmaids (Photo credit: pandameixiang)

At what point
Does the slave
To self-righteous
Selfishness
Arise?

At what point cry ‘Halt!’
‘Enough!!’
To a litany
Of absurd and costly
Ephemeral demands?

Do we question
The expectations
Of these rituals of choice
And the sorority
Of wedded sisterhood?

Always the bridesmaid
Never the bride
I say those who have been
Enslaved
Know it is honourable
Not to enslave

Arise, arise!
Remind your captor
That one day in their lives
Should not equate
To an eternity in yours.

(Inspired by reading a magazine article at the hairdressers about bridezillas, so no offence meant to those brides who are more moderate and reasonable in their demands :) …)

Like most people, I have a number of sides to me. The most interesting one probably emerges through my writing, hence this blog. I love to read, and also to write, and so this is a way to share both.

    • Thank you so much! One of my closest friends is experiencing this at the moment – she was telling me a story re that and I said ‘oh, I just wrote a poem about this, based on a magazine article I read’. She assured me the aricle doesn’t exaggerate at all!!! :)

Oh I so relate! Great piece… And no exaggeration at all I can assure you!

  2. purple says:

<< am wishing I was a more informed about whatever it is this is trying to communicate … but I will just smile, shrug, and say I liked the poem anyway. (are there groomzillas? maybe it is a gender thing?) Teasing by the way …. well, sorta …

  3. Oh my gosh, this is PERFECT. Love this post. I lived through being a bridesmaid to Bridezilla. It actually ruined our friendship, sadly.

    • Thank you so much! This was inspired by a magazine article, then i was talking to a friend a few day laters who was going through the same thing right now…it’s scary how accurate it is in some cases. Sad to hear your frienship was ruined but if she behaved that way perhaps it is for the best. Mind you, it does make you wonder if brides get possessed by something and have major personality transformations during the wedding phase… :)
